It would appear that the illegal copy of Empire Total war runs smoother than the steam version. I shelled out 54.12$ US. My buddy a hacker to the core got a hacked version. And now they have released a cracked update. I am no babe in the woods when it comes to playing illegal games. But there are certain games
I always buy. Starcraft Universe, Warcraft Universe, Command and Conquer Universe, Warhammer (even the crappy mark of chaos).
The legal games should run smoother than the hacked versions

You have been pretty lucky then. I have never had issues like I am with this game. My systems are pretty up to date with all the up to date drivers, and I cant play a game more than 40 turns, usualy far less turns, without it crashing to desktop. 1 machine has Vista and 1 has XP, and bothe pretty much do the same thing. Now that doesnt mean everyone has problems but from what I can tell from forums and boards across the net way more than normal are people having issues so bad rendering the game unplayable. Now I do likewhat I do see before it crashes but i realy wish I could fully enjoy the game. But right now I would definately take a rfund if it was offered, and maybe get the game again later after all the issues have been resolved.

It would depend more on your system, not the legal status of the game.

The game has only crashed twice on me in the past week, and that's after 42 hours of play. The first time was during a level load, and the second was after I left a battle in 'deploy troops' for 3 hours to go eat dinner. I had saves right before both, so no worries. And I'm on Vista too. I think your "hacker" friend is just lucky. And a putz.

Hmn .. Look like I'm one of the lucky guys, ETW haven't crashed for me other then when I use the wrong trainer to the wrong patch.
And its not the game fault that I make it crash.

Another lucky guy here. Since the official release, etw has been running almost uninterrupted, execpt for the night time, quite smoothly (my pc is already 1 year old, I just changed the video card) and without unexpected crashes. The CTDs i had was my fault, because I used the wrong trainer. Even when i left 2-3 hours the game in "standby" nothing happened, it just restarted well.

@urafax: your hacker friend maybe has just a great computer that makes the game run smooth...

i created the trainer on a notebook:

    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU
    Q9650 @ 3.00GHZ
    1.97GHz, 3.00GB RAM

    Windows XP

dual GeForce 9800M GTX vid cards.

never experienced any crashes with the game while testing. seems to run very smoothly here as well.

    best,
