Maybe it's possible that the Alliance has Shepard and Co. going off the grid, assembling a crack team of soldiers and scientists to take on the Geth and the Reapers.

So, kind of like the A-Team in Space, with hot alien chicks.

He's listed as KIA so no one is looking for him.

its been "sugested" by a bio dev that you keep your saves of mass effect for Mass effect 2

I just restarted the game just because of 'keeping' save files for the sequel. Maybe Shepard is gone missing this time instead of KIA.

Hell.. 2010 is way too long for wait.
By the way, there's going to be new patch for Mass Effect on PC.

That would give him the designation as MIA (Missing In Action). KIA means that they have confirmation that s/he was killed on the battlefield.
