Even if he knocks you down you can fight back, if your quick enough. Personally I never had a problem fighting him. but you have to be quick.

Just drop a proximity mine then open the door, he is blown away !

There seems to be a glitch. I do remember seing the left mouse illuminate to shoot him when I very first encountered Vanek. Then when I replay I do not get the mouse illuminating any more!!! Stupid thing is there is no previous save games I can fall back on!!

Not sure what problem you guys are having, i did this perfectly on my first try. i put my zoom button to my mouse 2, and my melee to shift.

just mashed shift until it was lined up with his head, then mashed mouse 1, and BOOM. >_>

I'm not sure why, but this seems to be more difficult sometimes than others. I lined him up right away once, and fought for a couple minutes another time (which seems like forever). Oh, and one time I was drunk, so that doesn't count. Nearly broke the mouse.
I did also notice one time that the left mouse button indicator didn't appear, as someone else pointed out. I kinda knew when to press the button, since I've beaten him before, but I still missed it the first time and had to try a second time.
Gonna try remapping the melee key next time, that sounds like a good idea.
