Alt + ctrl + delete. This brings up the taskmanager, from here you can stop certain programs that are running in the background. But be warned, shutting them all down, or the wrong ones, will results in an unstable system and may cause problems.

For this, the only programs you should close are the ones listed as being used by the account you're legged into. NEVER close programs being run by 'system', 'local machine', ect.

Also, the only program under user that needs to be running in order for you to properly use Windows is 'explorer.exe'. Everything else can be shut down.

    Hi All

I’m getting about 20fps or under using the setting below, it’s just about playable, lower the settings does not seem to affect the fps much.

    1680x1050
    Texture Quality: Medium
    Render Quality: Medium
    View Distance: 55
    Detail Distance: 55
    Vehicle Distance: 55
    Shadow Distance: 8
My system specs are E8500 cpu, 4gb ram, gtx260 black edition, vista 32bit & latest gefoce driver.

Tried the suggestions in this thread, but doesn’t seems to help much, it’s really disappointing since games like crisis and stalker clear sky can run over 30fps in high settings on the same system.

Does anyone know what is making GTA 4 runs sooooo slow? I don’t think the graphics are any more complex than any other current PC games.

By the way, this trainer for GTA is GREAT, GTA is not the same if you can’t go on a killing rampage once a while without having to worry about health and ammo.

Try reducing your vehicles and detail distance to 25 or so. If that doesn't help, reduce your view distance to 25 (with the other 2 at 25 as well) and see if that increases the performance. If it does, try increasing you vehicle and detail distance back to 55 and see if the game still gives the same performance as it should have done with all of them on 25. If your game still runs smooth, it's your graphics card, if not, it's your system. If your game runs fine with just vehicles and detail distance to 25, it's your CPU.

You can also try to reduce the settings even more to 20 or 15 and reducing the shadows.

Reduce View Distance , you don't see difference ingame but it takes much of performance.
Vehicle Distance can be, it just change ammount of vehicles on the streets.
Detail Distance can be reduced too it's like View Distance.

Render Quality don't need much performance so you can use it on maximum.

Try to make every distance bit lower but texture and render higher it will be better.

I was just thinking, what does render quality do? I don't really notice anything in-game and it does not take away performance.

Ok. But I thought GTA4 didn't had a AA function.
