Well, topic, obviously. I've been wondering this lately. The game's (non-radio) music is pretty darn good I feel; some sort of a mix between Oblivion's soundtrack and a couple other things, like the theme from Terminator. No, I'm NOT kidding, listen to it. It's there, man. And the Radio music is GREAT, love the stuff from the 30's.

ANYWAY, I've just been thinking, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if I could whip together my OWN Radio Station, with a different playlist? Just to spice things up, say, in a pitched firefight?" So, I went into the main FO3 folder, just diddling around, and saw the Music folder (it's in the Data folder, btw). The music therein is the Default Non-Radio music. Now, I haven't looked for very long, but so far I haven't seen a folder or file with the Radio Music selections in it.

Basically, I'm just asking around to see if anyone's found what file/folder the Radio Music is located in/directed through. Not CRUCIAL, but would be GREAT to know. Gonna be looking in the .ini files next, if I find anything, I'll keep posted. Again, if anyone knows where the stuff is, go ahead and post.

the radio-music is in one of the .bsa-files.
you can open those with one of the tools for oblivion. (BSA Browser, i think)
that tool should show you the path where the game is looking for them.
if FO3 is working like most games i know, it will look in the compressed/encrypted game-files, and after that in the folder on the harddrive it selfe.
this way it should be possible to put the right files in the right folder without fiddeling with the original game-files.

since i just came across that one, i would recomend you to replace the files for the radiostation of that old lady with her violin.
    why?
    because:
    1. there are no radios standing around, playing that station.
this way you dont need to create "low quality" versions of the songs you'd like to hear, to fit the ingame-feeling
    2. you can switch it on and off as you like, since its a radio-station you receive via your pip boy
    3. you still have the major radiostations intact. (on the other hand: having one of those flying-eye thingys play heavy metal would definetly be funny! =) )

i just lookes the files up in the "Fallout - Sounds.bsa":
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_01_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_02_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_03_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_04_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_05_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_noodling_06_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_partitano3gigue_bach_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_partitano3p_bach_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_sonatano2grave_bach_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_vc_1stmov_dvorak_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_vc_2ndmov_dvorak_radio.mp3
    sound\songs\radio\violin\mus_violin_z_sarasate_radio.mp3

    those should be the files.
the one thing you need to get this one started is to finish the quest for the old lady with her violin, that you have to get from that one vault. (i can look up the details, if you need them)

please look the files up yourself. i typed the pathes by hand and copied the multiple times. so im not sure if they are typo-free. ~=)

    short conclusion:
create the following folders: Fallout 3\Data\sound\songs\radio\violin\
put mp3's in the folder with the names i wrote above. (the "noodling"-files are the moderations. the part where the lady usually talks)
finish the violin-quest ingame and tune into agatha's radio-station. (just remembered her name ~=) )

i hope i was of any help. =)
its so fast it can do an infinite loop in thirty seconds!! =)

    Hi, maybe I can help...
this game have only 5 themes during the playtime only for ambience, these are in

    \Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Data\Music\Public\

    Public_01 Artist - Inon Zur = Title - PUBLIC 1 V2
    Public_02 Artist - Inon Zur = Title - PUBLIC 2
    Public_03 Artist - Inon Zur = Title - PUBLIC 3 V2
    Public_04 Artist - Inon Zur = Title - PUBLIC 4 V2
    Public_05 Artist - Inon Zur = Title - PUBLIC 5 V3

If you want to change the music, you must to change the content of then, I mean if you want to hear something expecial you must change the name of your file to one of these and put then in this dir.

But you have only 5 song to change

    That's all. Bye

P.D. - There are others dir in the music Dir, may be you can changes others but I think they change so much the filling of the game.

Takeda-san, thank you! I did that very thing about an hour ago! Swapped a bunch of the .mp3's out with ones from Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden (really fun and quirky indie console-style RPG, I recommend it!) and a couple other tinny classic tunes! A lot of fun! Killa_B, I'm still working on what you suggested, been having a little trouble, but making progress. Messed up once or twice, but getting the hang of it. Mostly it's just that my computer has been running for, like, a week straight. Gonna give it some cooldown time, try it again. I'll post with specific questions (if any) sometime tomorrow.

    here is the long explanation:
    -=PART ONE=-
-browse to your fallout 3 folder, using the explorer
-go to the subfolder called "Data" inside the fallout 3 folder
-create a new folder called "sound" inside the "Data" folder
-go into the newly created "sound" folder, and create a new folder there called "songs"
-again go into the "songs" folder you just created and create a new folder with the name "radio"
-go into the "radio" folder and create the folder called "violin"

    -=PART TWO=-
-choose up to 12 songs you would like to hear
-rename those mp3-files each to one of the names at the end of this post
-copy your mp3-files into the "violin"-folder you created in the last step of -=PART ONE=-

    -=PART THREE=-
-start the game and finish "Agatha' Song" quest
-use your "Pip Boy 3000" to tune into "Agatha's Radio Station"

    -=SHORT WALKTHROUGH=-
to finish "Agatha's Song" do as follows:
-travel up to the most north-eastern corner of the capital wasteland
    -find "The Republic of Dave"
-from there tavel straight west until you find "Vault 92"
it's about a 1/4th of the full distance from the east-end to the west-end
    other locations near "Vault 92":
-"Old Olney" is a short distance about east of "Vault 92"
-"Greener Pasture Disposal Site" is south of "Vault 92" and allmost as far away from "Vault 92" as "The Republic of Dave" is
-"Clifftop Shacks" is west of "Vault 92" and as far away from there as "The Republic of Dave" is
    -enter "Vault 92"
-!IMPORTANT! there are Radroaches (not dangerous), Bloatflys (a bit more dangerous) and Mirelurks (very dangerous) in there! make sure you are equiped to fight those!!!
-NOTE: if your hacking-skill is good enough, hack the computer terminals that are on the walls all over the place. if you find one with "Sound Flush" or something like that in the menu, use it. it kills the mirelurks instandly. but i dont know if it kills all mirelurks in the entire vault.
-search the vault until you find a studio. the door is locked, but can be unlocked via a computer in the room next to it. the violin should be in the rear lefthand corner, if you look at the room standing in the door.
-travel to "Agatha's House" located allmost at the center of the capital wasteland. its surroundet by rock-wall and you can only enter it via a bridge that is located to the south.
    locations near "Agatha's House"
-"Germantown Police HQ" is allmost north from "Agatha's House"
-"Minefield" is north-east of "Agatha's House". the distance between "Agatha's House", "Germantown Police HQ" and "Minefield" are allmost the same, so those three locations are in a allmost prefect triangle standing upside down
-"Scrapyard" is a medium distance to the east of "Agatha's House"
-"Meresti Trainyard" is a very short distance to the south-east of "Agatha's House"
-"Big Town" is south-west of "Agatha's House" a bit farther away than the "Scrapyard" is
-"Hallowed Moors Cemetary" is a medium distance to the west of "Agatha's House"
-enter the house and find agatha.
-talk to her. one of the dialog branches is about her living alone and only a few caravans visiting her about once a week. she "pays" the caravans with the music she plays on her hand-made violin, but she could play much better on a real one. tell her you can get it for her. about then should be a dialog option available that you allready have it.
-the quest "Agatha's Song" shoud be finished as you leave the dialog.
-leave the house, and you should receive a message, that "Agatha's Radio Station" is now available to you.

NOTE TO THE WALKTHROUG: i wrote this guide entirely out of my memory with help of a very crude map that can be found here: Link
"Vault 92" is location "09" on that map, "Agatha's House" is location "31".
so i can't guarantee you that the locations are exactly where i sayed they would, but im pretty sure they are.

    -=MP3-FILE NAMES=-
    they now are typo-free!
    the names are:
    mus_violin_noodling_01_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_noodling_02_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_noodling_03_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_noodling_04_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_noodling_05_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_noodling_06_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_partitano3gigue_bach_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_partitano3p_bach_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_sonatano2grave_bach_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_vc_1stmov_dvorak_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_vc_2ndmov_dvorak_radio.mp3
    mus_violin_z_sarasate_radio.mp3

i think thats about as much explained as i can.
if i missed something or you need more help, please post the questions here.

    i hope i helped. =)
