how do you get out of the city every time I try to get out of the city the gate closes.

Select 1 of your 2 units of soldiers, and right-click on the gatehouse that's just North of you. Now, select your knight and the 2nd unit of soldiers, and send them through the gate and off to your base camp. Do NOT try to send the 1st unit through the gate - just send your knight and the 2nd unit. When they've got out, select the 1st unit and send them along the top of the walls, heading North/East until they get out at the river. That's the only way that the 1st unit can get out of the city - and that's also an easy way for your troops to get into the city later....
