The game is great but it's too darn slow any tips for speeding things up a bit

It doesn't seem "too slow" to me.
You can play the game as fast as you want, really. You can play strictly goal-oriented to coast through the early phases, then once you get to space age, that's where it's all dependent on your gaming capacity. You can be a ruthless warmonger, or an economic wiz, trading spice, and buying solar systems; or even a peaceful ally, looking to build alliances throughout the universe.
If you think the beginning phases are too slow, just beat them once, then you can jump straight to space age on your next game.

It's mostly likely your RAM and CPU.
