Ok folks ive been ripping out my hair due to this idiotic problem EA refuses to fix. After a while i managed to find one fix out of many. This was an unexpected fix due to me running a HD tv instead of a standard monitor.
SITREP: You install BFME2 and or ROTWK, and after launch you get a game.dat error followed by a c++ runtime error, or something like that.
My issue was that the installer/launcher and such did not understand that i had a monitor capable of wide screen resolutions. The launcher panic's out and crashes instead of just launching in the lowest rezolution.
make sure you can see hidden files (you should know how)
go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(your login name)\Application Data\My The Lord of the Rings, The Rise of the Witch-king Files
If it doesnt exist, run the game once and let it fail, it should make the directory.
Inside this directory make a text file called options.ini
put in this information:
AudioLOD = High HasSeenLogoMovies = yes IdealStaticGameLOD = High Resolution = 1024 768 StaticGameLOD = High TimesInGame = 5
it should be enough to get the game to start, then you can change your settings in the game.
Im just trying to save some fellow members/guests the headache ive faced after upgrading my hardware.

(Unfortunately) confirmed as non-working.
Already had the file (for those of you with Vista, it's located in C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\My The Lord of the Rings, The Rise of the Witch-king Files) and it contained my settings and such, and tried both removing the file altogether, and creating a new with the data provided.
A strange thing is that the game only crashes when running the trainer before launch, I could play the game perfectly yesterday when running without the trainer.
So if anyone has another idea, come forth with it ^^
Update: The trainer is definitely the issue, as the game starts up without the trainer, and if you try alt-tab'ing to windows and launch the trainer the game will get a C++ runtime error.
Update2: The trainer is the issue combined with the game .exe and .dat, as the game runs perfectly with the trainer and the available crack applied.

Well maybe it did not fix your issue, but it fixed my startup issue. I couldnt even get the game to launch without the ini file. So its verified to work, for people that have a startup problem. It does not fix all the errors out there for the game.
Today i had one crash related to the game.dat, but from reading the Ea forums, it seems it happens once in a while. The crack that we use probably upsets some things, go figure.
I got tired of fighting the trainer, i just couldnt get it to work, so i built up a mod. Its kinda funny to watch your catapults knock things around with with too much power
