I'm not very far in the game so I don't know how to summon yet but I think it requires magic like the other FF games.

figured it out btw im at the first sephy fight where are u and its kinda like once out of every 20 modulating phases

lol Well its kinda hard to play with broken fingers.

well summonig relys on the modulating phases. when u get one u could get lucky and then the summons will roll instead of friends. then u have to rely on luck to get the right combination to summon, just like friends on the module.
Now if dont have any summons like u said, u probably beat ifrit but havent done the hojo labratory mssion for it on the extra missions on the menu. U need to beat him again and then u get the ifrit materia then ifrit will be added to the DMW.
Then u can summon using the phases.
