you are talking about the cool, almost out-of-place looking door in the basement of the old abandoned house in cheydinhal right?

the one that has the hand on it and is in the dug out cave type walk-way?
    ugh

well, i don't know what to say, except that your disc might be scratched, mine is really scratched, and before i cleaned it, the gate looking doors in ayleid ruins wouldn't open when i stepped on the buttons that opened them, so you might want to clean your disc
    ugh

In my last run thru of Oblivion, I ran all the quests of the dark brotherhood after completing the main quest and the mage school quests (so that I was "champion of cyradil" and "archmage" ) I found that the Blade of Woe ended up being much better with a higher character.

The answer to your question: no you do NOT have to use the blade of woe for anything. I used either the magic dagger that I found in an Ayleid ruin or used arrows for most of my kills.

The Blade of Woe will become one of the best weapons of the game when you finish all of the dark brotherhood quests and become the listener (head of the brotherhood). The old lady will upgrade it, and if you are level 21 or higher the blade is mighty potent. But until the very end of the Dark Brotherhood quests, it was just something else to drag around that I could not drop.

To get thru the door at the Cheydinhal sanctuary of the Black hand (the door with the skull on it). When you approach it, a message should pop up, choose the answer that contains the word: "sanquine". The other message will not work. This is spelled out in the long winded speech by Lucien LaChance.

If you don't get teh message, then there is something broken in your save game or you didn't get the flag set for some reason. Try starting from a save from before the assassination and do it again, but this time, LISTEN to everything. Some of the quests get bugged if you don't actually listen to all the talking (Benirus Manor comes to mind as the guy drags on and on... very long 😵 )
