I made a secret base but when i gamelink to a friend we can't battle is it because were using wireless? and

To battle a friend in their Secret Base, you need to mix records with them at a Pokemon Center. Then you can disconnect the link cable or the wireless adapter and find their Secret Base and battle a computer trainer with his/her Pokemon Team.
That is, if you're talking about actual Gameboys. If you want to fight in real-time, you vs him at the same time, you can battle them without mixing Records.
Take note that once you mix records you can only battle them once a day, and that you might want to mix them again when/if your friend updates his/her team.
