i'm pretty sure he turned super saiyan because it angered him that even though he was such a great fighter and belonged to a higher class of saiyans, that a lower-class warrior(goku) could out do him. so his outrage transformed him

he wanted to be the greatest saiyan alive. he was training very hard in space. he was destroying meitoirs in space and there was one giant one and when he was trying to destroy it he got hurt. right then my realized he didnt care about being stronger then goku, or becoming super saiyan. then it happened
