Well, seeing as how probably at least 80% of the world hadn't ever even heard of the Battle of Thermopylae before the movie came out, it really taught plenty of people about it. Not all of the things were accurate, but not all of the things were false either.
I think it's more dangerous when history is misrepresented than when it is completely unknown.
Let's say all the facts in that movie was lies and rubbish, its still a good storyline and a good movie, right?

Well it is historically accurate that the Persians attempted to take over more land. The battle which took place there was real along with the 300 Spartans that fought the Persians.

Close enough. Although it wasn't simply as black and white as that.
