So, does the main character only has one weapon, that "Silver Sword"?

No, he can carry 1 silver sword (for monsters), 1 steel sword (for humans), another steel sword or heavy weapons and a dagger (two daggers later in the game, but thats much further on). I seriously recomend this game if you like semi scripted rpg's.

he can buy upgrades of the swords with rune stones or already upgrated swords than he owns

You can get better armor/clothing later in the game.
You can always download the demo and play that before deciding whether or not to buy the full game.

Witcher is an interesting RPG, but not done in the typical way. More focus is spent on gathering materials and making potions that give you some very good capabilities. The focus is more on the story and things you must do rather on trying to get that special piece of armor or weapon.
