I beat the squid boss thingy, friends come round, son picks up controller and starts playing game. I take it off him and start playing. I'm at a shrine with cannons around it and I don't know what to do. By the time I work it out, I lose, I get some cut scene telling me that I've lost and so i switch the game off, hoping it will take me back to my last save, but I don't think it has. I can't do anything,can't go through any portals, the wot not book tells me to go to the ice village but I can't get through. Have I really messed up and do I have to start the game all over again?

You dont need to restart Just try back tracking abit Did you get the Monster Chilla yet? (looks like a yeti) If so , you need to use him to climb the Ice wall leading up to the ice village (Looks like a frozen Waterfall)
And whenever you die, dont turn off the game, just wait a bit, and it will respawn you with all your progress intact
The game also autosaves after every new area, boss kill or secret earned / discovered so your fine, just gotta get your barings
