Turning off the xb is the only way, I think.

Where are these "SKULLS" i keep hearing about them but i can't seem to find any??
I Belive you quit out of the level you have the effect on or turn off the X-box.

my xbox is already turned off. if i load a game and then turn it off, will that work?
