Does it say something about an "error report" when it goes back to desktop?

When you say it crashes a little while into game do you mean at a certain point every time or after you play for a certain amount of time or during a particular quest?
i would suggest, perhaps, you try to download the 1.1 BETA patch maybe that would cure the problem. maybe theres a newer one out now i got mine on the 27 May 2006.

I have patched to version 1.1 final.....and the crash does not happen in any partiqular place...do you think it can have something to do with my graphics card heating up??

i got the patch yesterday, too, it could be your graphics card, but i doubt it, that wouldn't usually crash it would just "freeze". Is your computer good enough or is it bare minumum? cause i had to spend about €1500 getting mine upgraded, i also found out you need a reeaalllly goooood computer to run the game properly, i got two PCI-E 512 radeon graphics cards, 2Gb RAM and a 3ghz processor this is what i would recomend or a bit lower, you dont really have to have two graphisc cards, i just like the speed!! . anyway you should make sure your computer is up for it, that might be the problem. does it crash when certain musical notes play in the game

ok here are the minimum specs you need: (there on the box)
    windows XP
    512MB system RAM
2ghz intel pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB DirectXcompatible Video card and DirectX 9.0(inc.)compatible driver
    8x DVD-Rom drive
    4.6 GB hard disk space
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card (this could be your problem, but not sure)
    keyboard and mouse.

I think my computer is good enough to run the game...I have:
    1x Geforce 6800 GT
    Pentium 4 3.2 ghz prescott
    1,5 gb ram
    and of course directx9.0c

    this should be enough? or???

i think it's your graphics card; cause it ain't on the back of the box.

i think i saw a program that lets you play oblivion on lesser graphics cards (i think it was planetelderscrolls... but i'm not sure, if i find it i'l post a link for you)
