well i'm not sure about ps2 but i'm pretty sure it works the same way as xbox. (I play xbox live)
you need a router or a modem, and buy a adaptor cord and hook it up in the back to your modem from your ps2. i don't know all the technical words for this stuff, because my xboxlive has been hooked up since it came out, so you might want to go to a electronics store and ask there.

Ok, you go and by and HDD, then you by a Network Adapter. Then there should be a panal the comes off on the back of your PS2. You just pop the HDD in, then you put the Network Adapter onto it. Then you plug either a telephone cable, or an ethernet cable into the back of the Network adapter. Its not very complicated, but it is quite expensive.

I forgot to mention, the only way I know of to get a HDD is to buy it with Final Fantasy 11 Online. I dont think it comes any other way. If you dont want FF11 (because it costs money to play), just put the HDD in and sell the actual game. The only option of play it uses is online, so you cant play singleplayer. I had it for a year, its really fun, but my credit card ran out on it.
