This sounds so pathetic, ha, but at the very beginning, the night before they leave on the raft, I'm having so much trouble beating the heartless. Do you have any tips or tricks or anything that could help me beat them?

Yeah, the wooden sword won't to crap.

You have to go to the little island where you would fight Riku at the begging of the game. You get the Keyblade there, and then go to the secret place.

Just go near the secret place, then climg the ladders near that area, go up up and up and you will finbd the cloth in that little area.
