Yep the trilogy was never an open world. But people were expecting this new game not from the trilogy to be open world.
The original had open world elements but wasn't traditional open world either, you couldn't access everything in the MACO or on foot. from the looks of it though they have brought back many elements from the original, including a complicated leveling system which a lot of people missed when they dumbed down everything in 2.

I know what the old ones were. They whre not open world per say. The Devs have even stated this. It is large areas only and the leveling system is not complicated its actually straight forward.
Well with the latest trailers out it does look like open world to me..
Micheal Gamble one of the Devs did state it is not open world and from what they have been saying it is more towards the DAI style to give the feel of open world. But not.
