It's a byte value where the maximum is 255. If you add more than 255 you will get an overflow exception. As long as you stay below 255 you can do everything you want.

I can't seem to get the trainer to work. I tried all the suggestions as far as running as administrator, tried starting both trainers at separate times before the game closing and reopening the game then pressing F1 at the main menu, uninstalling my antivirus and all that but all it says on the bottom of the trainer screen is "waiting for game" and of course none of the editing options work. Am I still doing something wrong?

Does your system meet the requirements for the trainer?

Yes I just tried reinstalling everything and it reports that it is already installed.
