We just downloaded the game fresh from Steam, activated trainer at main menu and options worked no problem. Some things we noted:

1) if CoSMOS is on, game will crash after starting
2) if you alt tab out from game, then alt tab back, game will crash
3) run game in window, if you run another program while game is running, game will crash

So, something must be interfering with the trainer on your end or one of the above instances exists. But current trainer works with current version of game on Steam.
