I can't find a free antivirus that doesn't give trainers a load of trouble.

Some time ago I switched to bitdefender and it was great, but it's recently--today, actually--decided every trainer is a virus and I can't figure out how to add exemptions that the program actually follows. So it's gone.

Can the CH staff recommend a free antivirus?

Windows 10 defender is all you need.

Can anyone tell me if this is true?

Why would you not need a anti virus still. Is window's 10 defender something so special it handles all the online threats we face today?

I'm being serious as I don't know the answer to this.

I gave up on Windows 10 after about 15 minutes. 7 is the OS for me.

And MSE probably won't be updated before too long, to force people to migrate to 10. Plus, my experience with it is profoundly negative.

I have used Panda for a long time. It is a top notch free AV and PC Magazines 2016 editors choice for AV.

From PC Magazine:
"While Panda Free Antivirus doesn't outperform the very best commercial antivirus tools, it's way better than the rank and file of for-pay solutions. It remains our Editors' Choice for no-fee antivirus." [url]www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2463592,00.asp#disqus_thread' target='_blank'>Link

Windows Defender on Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8.0 is anti-virus. It is the exact same engine that MSE uses, and the exact same engine Microsoft uses in its Enterprise product.

Given I have used pretty much every AV software product an they all are around 95-97% detection rate, and the missing detection, is basically stuff that isn't even used there is little difference between something else.

Given the list of AV products I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy is about 2 pages long, and the stuff I would recommend would fit on a small napkin, Windows Defender by the way would be on that napkin.

If the MVP Consumer Security people are reliable, they say this:

-----------------
There is no end of support even listed for MSE on Windows 7 and Windows 7 will be supported through 2020.

A logical conclusion based on available information is that MSE will be supported on Windows 7 until at least 2020.
-----------------
I've been using MSE backed up with the free Malwarebytes Antimalware and they've done a good job.

That said, I don't do any surfing at edgy websites. I gather info, read reports and play games using CH trainers on this PC. For that, I don't need the top of the line. My goal has been to use something that will get along with CH trainers.

If you do go to sites that have sketchy content, it's just common sense that you will want an AV and Malware product that does a much closer scrutiny of what you do.

Here's some comparisons for free AV:

Thanks for that feedback. It did seem redundant to me to install McAfee after upgrading to Windows 10 with all the inbuilt security features that Microsoft has. However I will reinstall Malwarebytes after reading these comments. Cheers
