Also, one thing to take into account is that the game doesn't strive for 100% realism (but it's close) and they throw japanese humor into the mix. It might not be everyones cup of tea.

They've always thrown in western humor and such as well though.. Especially since Big Boss or Liquid Snake is american.
Younger people don't realize that the protagonist of the metal gear solid series, Big Boss, is actually the ultimate bad guy in the series Metal Gear and that his history is all there now
