I have the GTX 980 and couldn't be any happier. I also upgraded my ram to 32GB. Dying Light also uses this feature. My monitor is a 27" LED IPS 1080p and using this feature or not, I can not tell one shred of difference, good nor bad. it looks identical to me either way. The FPS are the same either way too.
I'm not clear on which two ways you're comparing on your laptop, could you specify a bit more? The DSR feature as I understand it is automatic, and does your laptop GPU have it as well?
Can anybody recommend a good quality Xtra widescreen that's 4K or not, that has a superb picture, 27" to 30" and hopefully around $1000 or less? One you've personally used or seen close up? It looks like prices have come down since the last time I looked.
If you want "big" resolutions, just use Nvidia's or Amd's multi-monitor functionality. I have been tri-screening for 2 years now and if you really want to feel in the game that is the way to go. I game kicked back in a Lazy-Boy with three 32" screens running 5760x1080. Curve in your outside panels and you have just made yourself a big "curved" monitor well before they hit the mainstream as they are now.
That is just awesome. I do not think I could convince the wife to let me do that.

I'm looking at a 27" 1080p 144Hz BenQ 3D.

The picture's quality won me
