For beginners I recommend to check out the free game engine called Unity:

    unity3d.com/

It is very popular, there are plenty of tutorials for it and it's focused on indie developers. You might to take a look on their video tutorials and their forum for stuff.

Learn how to hook Direct X APIs etc, and you are practically half way there.

Then all you need is to do the GFX, SFX etc.
Oh and Don't forget some tuts on ASM and defeating DMA

No kidding, as if programming game logic isn't a big enough pain in the @$$, you have to worry so much about gfx nowadays.
I do totally agree with Unity though, you can use Java or C# (which is my language) and it's very easy to work on either 2d or 3d games in there now. A lot of object referencing, so it makes setup so much faster.
Grammar and punctuation is the difference between; "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse." ...and... i helped my uncle jack off a horse.

the biggest part of game creation is coming up with the game itself. many people can code. it's the rare few who can come up with a good game concept, story, idea and then present it in a good way.

    good luck and best wishes!
