Brand new PS3 12gb £80.

Brand new PS3 500gb Super Slim £229.

Now to my question. Is it easy enough to go get another Hard drive and put it in to save dosh but of course bump up the storage space?

I just replaced the hard drive in my PS3 a few months ago and it was pretty easy. But I also have one of the old fat PS3s.

Hmmm well looks like my plan still might be in the works.

It's a hassle and a pain in the ass to replace the Hard Drive in any PS3 consoles. Especially the fat Boys. Since they are the oldest. At least IMO and from my experience.

Just get the 500gb Slim and save yourself the trouble.

@Toki - They are very easy to swap out. I have swapped out for upgrades in my PS3 and PS4.

You remove a blue screw that holds them in, pull out the hard drive, replace the hard drive, and put it back in. You then start up your PS3 with the OS format utility on a DVD or USB stick. The biggest pain in upgrading the HDD is formatting to FAT 32 since modern windows will not do it for you, and larger HDDs will fail with the DOS method. FAT32 Formatter is free and does the job quickly. Find it here: Link

One thing to bear in mind with the Super Slim, is that it has the cheapest and loudest fan. The standard slim is the overall best model they released.

Edit: I have owned the Slim and Super Slim PS3s and the only PS4 model. FYI: the PS3 will not read any higher than 1 TB, but you can add an external drive.

I've done it before. It's nothing special. Accepts standard laptop hard drives. Amusingly the stock HDD my PS3 came with had a sticker on it that said "Not for laptop use" suggesting it was very low spec.

You may lose save data that's on it though so don't invest saves on it if you do intend to upgrade it.
