Well if that's the case Loki1147, I'll give that option a try then when I'm stuck (I read on a steam forum somewhere yesterday that alien was still killing him with the melee option on so I've got to say I never tried it).
I admit so far I've only used the "Unlimited flashlight" option the one time and that was because I had run virtually run out of batteries and I had no flares left. The vent I was about to get into was pitch black and all you could hear in the near distance was the alien scurrying around in a vent somewhere...
All I could picture in my head was the Captain Dallas death scene!
In the DLC Crew Expendable you live that scene my friend, I always thought Dallas was kinda a chump, now after playing that I truly have a better appreciation for the character. Having that "Woman" Yelling directions in your ear, screaming that its right there, its RIGHT THERE! wow that really is an eye opening experience in a game.
No Melee does not work with the alien for no melee (as Loki1147 says it works in easy mode), so a no go there.
Agree, invisibility would be nice.

Been playing on hard mate, not sure why it wouldn't work for you but yes it does work.
If you turn on No Melee then lure it to "attack" another human, it'll run up and simply stare at them while they stare back, leaving you free to go about your business for a while, until you hit some scripted trigger for it to appear again.
