Not sure how far you actually got into the game, but the first two discs were easier than the last disc. The third disc is what I liked the most because you were able to go anywhere and do anything at that point. The first two discs of this game sets up all the story for the entire trilogy. Yea it started off slow but in the bigger picture it's a great group of games.
This is actually one of the very few PS3 games I played to 100% completion.
It is true that the game opens up after a point, but before reaching Gran Pulse, all you basically have is an endless series of corridors peppered with combat encounters (and whilst it is true that there are encounters where auto-attack doesn't cut the butter, they tend to be the exception rather than the rule). No city hubs, no changes of pace, no sidequests until you reach Gran Pulse. "It gets better several hours in" is not a good design choice IMO.
Also, I didn't particularly care much for the characters, I found severa of them (Snow, Hope, Lightning) a bit annoying.
That is not to say I didn't enjoy the game, just that, compared to previous FF intsllations, I found it had taken a lot of steps back from just about all points of view (save obviously graphics).
Still, just my two cents

Most console ports work better with a controller. It seems odd that this game does not sport the Controller Support tag. Hopefully it will be fixed/patched in upon release
