The game was good, but this current generation of players they want action action action eye-candy. So anything with long narrative etc people hate.
What really bothered some people (including me) was the fact that the game was linear to the point that you felt like you were wearing a straitjacket. This was particularly evident in the combat system where 99% of the time it was more convenient just to click auto every single time.
I like FF games in general, but this element was a bit insulting; I think Yahtzee put it the best "Final Fantasy has generally made an effort to mix the combats up with each game, and this time it makes it very clear that it would prefer to involve the player as little as possible"

Not sure how far you actually got into the game, but the first two discs were easier than the last disc. The third disc is what I liked the most because you were able to go anywhere and do anything at that point. The first two discs of this game sets up all the story for the entire trilogy. Yea it started off slow but in the bigger picture it's a great group of games.
