i would advise you to start from the beginning, as the story is connected, and starting at the second game, you would miss out on alot
I had forgotten all about AC1 by the time I played AC2, so and I can honestly say I didn't feel I missed out on anything, it felt very good explained.

AC1 is really that bad? Worse than AC3? I couldn't really stand to finish AC3. It is just so...boring. Also, it took my friend (very AC fan) a year and a half to finish the game. Normally he would beat every AC game within a month or two. Every time he pick up the controller to play AC3, he quit after 15 min.
That is your friend that is in question not the game. I played it solid getting everything for a whole week.
Just because your friend doesn't have the patience for it, does not mean it is a bad game, just he doesn't like it.
