Sins of a Solar Empire's got them too, it sounds a bit newer than what you're looking for though? (Came out in 2008.)

It wasn't the game with a race that looked like tigers, and you had to gather resources to upgrade your ships to travel further? I'm wracking my brains as I can see the races on the start up screen, it was quite vividly coloured, lots of purple/magenta if I recall?

What about Universe at War?

It's on Earth, but you do see the planet, there's a robot, alien and humanoid race. Plus the robot race could travel through these lines.

Or perhaps, Genesis Rising: The Universal Crusade? Fits more to your description tbh.

Im thinking Ascendancy by Logic Factory but it was for Win98 not XP.

God, i hate this time of year when college starts back up and work decides to tell you hey youre going full time now. im so so sorry that i havent been able to rply to all of you guys helping me out with this, and this thread is most likely dead but really thank you guys so much. the world got the better of my time and i wasnt able to check back.

It wasnt universe at war, that game is too new, but it sure looks interesting and im definitely going to check it out, thanks!

Sins of a solar empire is in the same boat as universe at war, too new but it looks interesting (good thing i got moved to full time )

Ascendancy looks very much familiar, perhaps i was guesstimating my timeframe wrong, and it wasnt on xp but on 98? It looks so familiar, but different at the same time, almost like it was a sequel to the game im talking about. Like i think there were buildings similar to looking like that, but they never took up alott of space (i.e. there was only 1 building on the home planet, but it looked exactly as they do on the images i could find of the game) the other couple of things that i remember as different were the boxes on top of the screen werent there, all the info was text that floated on its own, and that it seems like there was less color variety than this game. all in all its the closest we have come so far.

Also just an fyi the angle of view in ascendancy is exact to how it looked, that strange angled view of the ships and buildings. i feel like weve gotten really close with this one

The more and more i look at Ascendancy, the more and more i think that its what im looking for......

Ascendancy was a DOS game, so you likely played it on Win98.
