Got my new PC a few days ago. I remember hearing that you are never supposed to Defrag Solid State drives. Mine has a 1TB Crucial SSD for the Primary drive.
So I look at the Defrag schedule and it reports a Defrag was done to C: on 6-16-14 and it's 0% Fragmented. Also says my D: drive was done 6-26-14 and it's also 0%. I'm hoping it was mostly just analyzed since it only contained the OS at that time.
Can some one give me the actual 911 on this and was anything of negative measure done by that Defrag? That was done before I got the machine, so is it correct not to Defrag and do something called "Trim" instead? I don't fully trust random posts around the net, I'd rather hear from somebody here that knows for sure.
The other screwy thing is where you setup a Defrag schedule, it won't let me select just drive D:. If I check that, it fills in the Select All Drives box as well plus a box below that says Defrag all new disks. So, I selected none. Must be an 'undocumented feature'. Thanks.

Well, they are head to head faster drives and loading times are good. I kinda wish I had setup two in Raid 0 as well. My last two PC's had two WD 10,000 RPM drives in Raid 0.
My only 'complaint' actually is there is an occasional delay in I/O execution. It might pause from like 2-5 seconds then take off. To be honest, I never really noticed that on my WD 10K's. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.
Now I am told that maybe 1½ to 2 years in there may be some performance degradation as my SSD fills with data. You're not supposed to Defrag the SSD's they use something called TRIM. I'm just being very careful to delete unwanted items and already played games. I'm keeping Windows and games alone on the C drive. All else goes to the D drive or a DVD. I'm waiting for more information ro decide just how full I ever want the SSD to become.
A friend of mine with a 550GB SSD says the delay on his is getting worse as he continues to add data.
I recently saw one guy with the same issue say he was told the delay might be from the D drive waking up during an I/O request. And there's supposed to be an Intel SSD Toolbox which I want to get and see what's up.
I'll see how things go on this new Falcon but I'm not expecting the long life hard drive performance I got from the last two PC's of almost 11 years total. Both Alienwares had the WD 10K's in Raid 0. Not one downtime moment due to those HDs.

Yes I heard that about the degrading part but the Solid State I seen were with a 3 year warranty.I was thinking that's pretty good.Though they are still in the $500 bracket for the 1 TB so might keep my 2 10,000 rpm for a little while longer.Anyway thanks for the info.

I have had nothing but bad luck running 2 SSD drives in RAID 0. This is because TRIM, or wear leveling, can't run. So you end up wearing out some sectors earlier than others. I also found that the RAID array was unstable. This was because the controllers built into the drives themselves had a problem with being in a RAID. Now granted this was 2 years ago, and things may have changed since.
You should not have any worries using your SSD like a standard HD. Both my gaming rig and Home Theater PC have been running SSD's (Samsung 830 Pro's) now for 3 years and are still rock solid. I do things a little different then you. I have all my programs installed to the SSD, and all of my data and games on my "D" drive.
As far as the delay when accessing your standard drive, it is caused by it going to sleep when not in use. It does not matter if you have the drives set to stay awake all the time. You have to manually change the sleep settings in the advanced settings of your power management screen.
