The usual situation is that patches break trainer compatibility so when you try to activate the trainer the game will instead crash, however every now and then some game actually retains compatibility even after being updated.
(But I guess that might be mostly for older games now.)
EDIT: It also doesn't really help the CH team that even when a game (Like this one.) spends months in testing from pre-alpha to alpha and then beta before being released they still overlook some issues and just a day or so after release a new patch is released.
(Steam has also made it very easy for developers to maintain and update their games so there's a lot more patches released as a result.)
