I don't see how the two are connected at all.
They're made by different companies, have different stories and gameplay, and Dying Light just looks so much better than Dead Island ever looked.

Ah, you're right about that. I was thinking Deep Silver made Dead Island but they were just the publisher. Still, I think Dying Light looks better.
