I think it might have to do with how far into the game are. Trainer worked for me during first "Human" string of battles. Once it switched back to Varl, "First time you're in charge of Varl", doesn't seem to catch.
I went back over the nfo and I do think it's just us havin trouble remembering the order of the instructions.
To get battle options to work we gotta click a portrait first, then F1. Then wait till activated, then hit F1 again. Then click the target portrait and choose F2-4. The first portrait click is what most of us are missing I think.

The very first thing you must do when a battle starts is click the (first?) portrait. Then F1. If you do anything else before hitting the portrait, the code will not be found.

Thank you brutcus the author needs to rewrite the text fill to include that its the portrait(lower left corner) of the first character that one needs to click before hitting f1, as Ive been click the figures on the battle field.
