I don't know if this is related to the Windows 10 API issue mentioned on the forums, but I revisited this game today, and when I loaded up the trainer a "window" briefly opened then closed, and then Windows asked me to select a program to open *.tmp files. The trainer didn't open.
Have you tried the Trainer Troubleshooting Guide (Link)?
Read about the .tmp file problem in third bullet point.
tl;dr
Your antivirus and/ or firewall are preventing the trainer to write some files. Whitelist them or disable your security software.

Thanks, that got it working. The .tmp issue in the troubleshooting is not the same problem as I had, but I also thought I had MSE off... I didn't -_-
