I wanted to play the game "Tetris Plus" on my Gameboy, so I put in the cartridge that I had since I was in Kindergarten, and after the Nintendo logo, a box appeared saying "Clearing Data"
I've always played this game over the years and last time I played it was like 2 months ago, but why clearing my high scores now? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? The memorieees

I waste away hours and hours playing this game. I was once in the top ten for high scores, but have since fallen back to 21st place.

The game still works I'm just annoyed because the scores I got long time ago are gone.
Have you ever read something about Pokemon games clearing data automatically after a certain number of years? maybe this is the same case.

The save battery is probably dead by now. The game will still work yes but the save functionality will be dead. Pokémon Gold and Silver versions were notorious for going dead much sooner than usual because it had to run an internal clock that was part of the game features (it was improved in Crystal version but it too was a bit on the short life span).
