Right, so yesterday my laptop wouldn't log out, so it wouldn't shut down. It would stay on the 'Logging Off' screen for hours, until I eventually forced it to shut down.

I managed to fix it so it gets past the logging off screen, but now it won't shut down. It spends hours on the 'Shutting Down' screen, and I can't fix it. I tried to troubleshoot it, do a clean boot, but it hasn't fixed it, and I don't know what's causing it.

In addition, the disc drive won't load up anything. DVDs, CDs, games, nothing. The bar loads part of the way and then stops, again, for hours. I don't know if this is linked in any way.

I haven't installed any programs recently, and this has come on rather suddenly. Just a couple of days ago it was just fine, and I don't think I have any viruses, unless they're incredibly sneaky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Run TDSSKiller:
    Link

Then open a command prompt in administrator mode and type the below command:

    sfc /scannow

Could also be a hardware fault of some kind, try a memory scanner (if you have windows 7 there is one in the menu before start up by pressing F8)

I did both of your suggestions, it didn't find anything, and I'm not sure if I did the memory scanner quite right but my disc drive seems to be working again, so thank you!
