I paid the $12 and it says that I'm a free member and my trainer isn't working. How long does it usually take until I get full access to the Borderlands 2 Trainer?

Your trial is active and working properly. You wouldn't be able to download if it wasn't. If you're having trouble with the trainer, I recommend you look here and in the official trainer thread.
