I've tried resetting the shield option but it didn't have any effect , I was dead within a couple seconds. I've not encountered any problem with the trainer and asteroids. Tons of asteroids slam the ship extremely fast. I've never died in the asteroid field, with or without the trainer. Though, could it be an option for your ship to have infinite shields or hull? I never use either option as upgrading my shields to max is usually good enough.
