Right as this is a subject that go's on and on. I am currently riding my free trail of Mcaffee cause am waiting for cash to come in to get an a/v setup for a year.

I do download I do surf lots of sites I do some online gaming to. So my question is to everyone! What A/V would you Recommend?

I use MSE. It has a simple interface and is designed to be set and forgotten about. I also enabled several other stuff that act as shields before the AV level is reached (AV is the last line of defense in computer security much like your immune system is). All that can be viewed in the link in my signature.

OK I have looked at that and oh my god. Slightly shocked and confused. Can I still have an a/v on board just in case? Cause I notice it says in the little install guide for Microsoft Security Essentials.

"If you use another antispyware program together with Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you turn off real-time scanning in the other program. For more information, see the documentation supplied by that antispyware program."

Or should I just not bother with an antivirus software?

Just remove the other program. Almost all spyware is just harmless tracking cookies (and completely irrelevant if you use the Do Not Track feature in browsers or disable ads with addons). In fact, clearing your cookies and cache with something like ccleaner once a week accomplishes the same thing without compromising your computer resources for something pointless.

If you need a third party program to remove stuff, you have already failed in keeping bad stuff out. Computer security is primarily about prevention, not disinfection.

I did not know about the "Do Not Track feature" So I have set that and I am removing Mcaffee from my system. Set the DEP to cover everything. I just thought having an a/v there would be the last line of defense like.

Now see this ccleaner which do you use? CCleaner Free or Professional or Business Edition?

Free. Business/Professional is just buying premium support for professional or getting a license to use it commercially in business.

OK no problem then.

Now see the "Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit" I have put the programs said in the guide on the list, the only one that dose not like it is Skype which I use a lot. Now i only see a few things saying Ruining EMET is this normal? Since steam is on the list and is running but there is no tick on the EMET bit along with a lot of other processes. Should I even add games to this and even the trainers?

Also I am using fire fox web browser. I am doing the little plugin checks to make sure there up to date but are they worth having there?

VLC Web Plugin, Silverlight Plug-In, Microsoft® Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin and Shockwave Flash.

I know I am asking a lot of questions but I want to make sure I am going to be OK like. Do not want to ruin my new laptop not even had it a week lol

Addition I have looked at that secunia.com site and it seems to be focused to businesses than the home user. Am a little confused about that. Do I really need to use that site?

Oh wait scratch that last part I found the PSI bit lol *face palm*

The EMET is something you can skip. It's basically there to enforce all programs to use ASLR (If you got DEP enabled, that should be sufficient enough). I would not use this tool for trainers and games at all (it jumbles the address spaces so that malware designed to exploit things to get to privileged memory does not work. It'll cause all sorts of havock with trainers that rely on knowing which address to use). If I were you, I would just skip the EMET step completely.

Yes plugins are absolutely essential to keep up to date. Java and Adobe software are extremely popular vectors for malware to exploit. If these are up-to-date, malware that exploits earlier versions of the plug-in will not execute properly and become a dud (and your AV doesn't even have to do any work). If they are plug-ins you use, you should keep them.

For the secunia, you can use the PSI on a personal license (which is free). It does look very business like because many businesses do use secunia to keep their programs up to date. It's a useful tool to ensure your programs are up-to-date. If you're a minimalist (use a standard set of programs you're happy with and nothing more), then you can probably get by without it. If you choose not to use it, you will have to check every so often to see if your programs do have updates via their websites or whatever.
