Why wouldn't it work? It would be a simple process of making an image of his hard drive and transplanting it to your own. The only problem would be finding a large enough external storage device, and if you've got any USB hard drives that's not a problem at all.
The only downside to that would be you'd have all of his files and programs to clean off your system.

They probably don't want you to have a copy of their files, if you know what I mean.
I'd tell them to suck it up and let you have an image, but if there's no way. Still, I have to agree, I wouldn't use a Beta OS as your primary. That's a can of worms I wouldn't want to touch.

all i got is a set of backup disks cause i bought at best buy which i used then got slapped with a corrupt install (win update error 80004002, which has no fix, its a keep re-installing windows till it works issue)
dont really wana keep vista if i dont have to
i was gona download win 7 but no go on that
i can try to convince my bro for his win 7 backups (its still a "day of purchase" backup as far as i know)
i did change graphics cards, so i do have those disks dont think power supply needed disks and my unnecessary off board sound card bugs if installed from disk (bad software)
Pre-built computers used to come with a copy of the OS installed on them, but then they cheaped out and stopped doing it. Probably so you have to spend more money if you ever need to re-install.
How long ago did you buy the PC? You might be able to take the discs back and say they're corrupted and get a replacement.

I don't think you'd have except the game's graphics won't be as amazing and enjoyable like on Win 7. There's also tons of things that XP lacks not just games wise that windows 7 is really good at.
So knowing that, feel free to choose whichever OS you want.
