There are three main endings, but there are about 16 different variations of them, based on your actions and decisions. They're not big differences, but enough to make a difference.
Either way, Shepard lives in at least one of them.

what a crap ending, shepard dies regardles what you do?. or do i just play it wrong

Well I come across an interesting conversation with Joker with doing the GETH missions
Spoiler:
After going into the GETH Server, you return to the Normandy, if you speak to Joker he mentioned something about not known if this reality is real or a simulation, maybe it leaves an opening for ME4.
I really do hope they make a ME4, personally I've never come across a game where you actually care about the characters, the writing on all 3 ME are awesome, and you do get drawn in to the whole story.
