Oh yeah FF 13 was TOO linear, I really felt that all I was doing is reaching that place on the map, except for the last 3 chapters of it, though I didn't find it a bad game, I just had higher expectations for it.
And when it comes to linearity FF XII is anything but that, because it's a free roam game! which I think was the main reason why I loved it so much, and with that you could have done tons of the million side quests if you ever feel like that you want to do something other than the main story, whether it's hunting jobs, defeating hidden bosses, finding secret summoning creatures, trying to find some OMGWTH awesome weapon/accessory or a lot more which never bored me. I always loved having the ability in a video game of choosing what I wanted to do in it next.

lol Pee remember when I wanted to play FF X first but you convinced me to play FF XII instead? Thank god I listened because it seems that the people who usually like one of those games wouldn't like the other one. xD

I'm scared they'll change the combat and stuff when they remake it T_T
Like, getting to see them look even more beautiful is appealing but it'd break my heart if they replaced the gameplay. If they replace anything with something from XIII I will cry hysterically for a week.
XIII was just awful, and the sad thing is I actually like the story and can't finish it =/

Blitzball makes FFX. Love that game <3. I didn't like how linear it was. It was pretty much walking in a straight line. I mean, JRPGs are usually incredibly linear, but FFX took the cake.
I think that technically, FF13 is the sole owner and CEO of that cake... FF13 made FFX look like a sprawling sandbox game by comparison (which is part of the reason why I didn't like 13... )
I never got that far into FFXIII. From what I played it was horribly linear, no denying that. I did enjoy the lack of random encounters though =). Random Encounters suck >=( And Keith David is always good. Vanille didn't seem too bad either, but I hear she gets a lot worse.

I liked Vanille, she wasn't that bad, she was just an anime sort of a character. Yeah random encounters suck, it feels like I'm playing pokemon which has long grass all over the place.
