Well they've now confirmed AC 3 will be set in the America's, during the war against the British by the look of things. I hope it's not solely based there, apart from anything I doubt the architecture at the time would lend itself to the kind of environments we're used to in this series, but I can see that this could possibly link into some continent crossing, coming back to London or France depending on the plot requirements.
I believe the new protagonist is going to be called Julian or something, not a particularly inspiring name (neither is Desmond to be honest, sorry all you Desmonds out there!) but it's fairly ambiguous so it could be a Native American name, American or British.
This period of history, which the whole series is founded on, with some liberties taken, is a very exciting time, full of political intrigue, upheaval, betrayal and world changing to some degree so there are lots of possibilities for a diverse and rich setting, I just hope that they don't lose sight of what made the whole Assassins Creed experience what it is and maintain a level of story, plot and environment that we all enjoy about this series, though I'm doubtful as they seem to have become a touch more formulaic as the series has progressed.
If we can have the same richness and variety of AC 2 without too much of the distractions from AC:B and AC:R and stick to what they're good at, then I am certainly going to be waiting in anticipation for this next release.
I'm sure we can all expect some serious marketing, hyperbole and teasers from Ubisoft after the 5th of March when they release more details about AC 3.

My only gripe with the setting is that, like you said, the architecture of that period doesn't lend itself to the sprawling cities of the previous AC games, and there certainly weren't any buildings of the size we're used to climbing around.

It's a shame we don't get a female protagonist too. We know there were female assassins, why not a female head assassin? Ah well.

Well I'm not sure what to make of the new trailer, it's a brave departure from what we've come to expect from the AC series. Running through trees, hacking Brits to bits (not sure how well received that'll be this side of the pond!)but it certainly seems an interesting premise.
I'm hoping that there's some kind of follow on from AC:Embers, I've read lots of rumours about more Desmond-themed adventures, which I'm not sure if that's a good thing, I didn't particularly like those sections in AC:R, detracted from the overall gameplay and seemed a bit pointless, maybe they were leading us into next part of the story but I sincerely hope not...
Maybe we can now open an AC 3 message board?

Apparently Assassin's Creed III is being developed by the team behind II, so we can expect brilliant things.

Also, it won't be "hacking Brits to bits". It's been confirmed that there will be Assassins and Templars on BOTH sides of the conflict. The Assassin we control is American, but nationality is meaningless to the Brotherhood. They're also bringing back puzzles similar to those by Clay (16), so I don't think there'll be "Desmond memories" like in Revelations. Those have served their purpose anyway.

The game's not out until October I don't see them making a thread until then. Maybe this should be our official AC3 topic?

Edit: On female assassins; I think we've not had one because the Assassin's appearance is always based on Desmond and a female assassin would be harder for him to synchronise with. We've seen plenty of awesome female assassins though, Ezio's daughter Flavia apparently grew up to be head of the Order or something.

That never actually occurred to me... good point on the female assassin.

I'm glad to hear it's not going to be a "hack Brits to bits". Not because I'm a Brit - I play games where I kill people of all nationalities, Brits included - but because I see enough ridiculous "US vs UK/EU" threads on the net without having one of my favourite game series joining in.

Nah, Ubisoft has been pretty good with not having the character pick sides in fights between nations/peoples. In the first game they may have depicted the Crusades, but they showed both sides of the conflict as best they could and Altair took lives on both sides.

I think it will be something similar; There will be Assassins on both sides loyal to their Order taking down the Templars making the mess. I think 16's puzzles in II made it clear that Templars orchestrated plenty of wars.

Though I'm sure there'll be plenty of dumb threads anyway. More people seem concerned about how they'll portray Native Americans. This seems a silly fear, since Ubisoft always try to be as respective and informed as they possibly can eg the Gypsy woman in Revelations and the various races and faiths shown in the first game.

Aye, they may have terrible tastes in DRM, but the one thing you can say for sure about them is that their games - or the AC series specifically - is respectful to the people and cultures they recreate.

I can't see a big part for Native Americans though. Not in that setting at least. Maybe they'll represent a faction for missions/blending, like the Gypsies as you mentioned.
