Get the trainer running first then the game. I then figured out that the trainer works by alt-tabbing back to desktop from the games main menu. Now press F1 and it will say 'Trainer activated'. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and nothing special was done bar what I've mentioned here.
First time I've had to activate the desktop as the main window for a trainer to press F1 in order to work but I'm happy its working.
