I have Six GB of RAM installed on my laptop (Windows 7 x64) and for some reason, around Two GB of RAM is always in use. Always. Like, even when I'm not running anything.

I was wondering if anyone has the same issue, or knows of a way to fix it? Not that I'm ever running low on RAM or anything, but it's just annoying.

It might just take that much to keep your computer running, but I doubt that because that is an extreme amount.

You may not have applications running in windows, however they can still be running in the background.

In Start > Search programs and Files.

Type: msconfig.

Go to the Startup tab.

Uncheck everything you don't want to have running all the time.

Reboot.

This should free a fair amount of your memory, however when you close applications they may take some time to close completely and some may have a memory leak.

A nice and convenient program I use is Advanced System Care 4 Pro. Ya you pay a price for it but I like it because I don't have to worry about accidently clicking on the wrong startup process and causing computer boot issues. It also cleans and optimizes your system which is really nice.
IF you decide to use it just be sure to deactivate the annoying PnP monitor that comes with it. It doesn't harm your computer or anything it just gets annoying real fast.

That's actually a medicore program. I would never recommend anything beyond CCleaner.

That RAM usage is normal. Windows Vista and 7 caches a certain amount of RAM for your most used programs allowing them to load faster than normal. When these programs are loaded, no additional RAM is consumed since it's already allocated. When RAM is needed for something else, this cache is cleared.

Performance issues would only arise if your page file suddenly starts spiking in size (besides, RAM is preferred over a page file because it's faster). You're much more likely to run out of desktop heap (memory used to index your open applications on the taskbar) before you run out of RAM.

@Neo7: You probably know more than I do on the topic but, very respectfully, I must differ slightly.
CCleaner is an amazing optimizor, I'll give you that. And it is far less buggy then ASC4 can sometimes be. But there are tools offered within ASC4 that CCleaner just doesn't have. Not to say they may not NOW have those tools...IDK its been a while since i've used it. But back when I was first looking for an optimizer ASC4 was the best I could find overall.
Both work. I guess its really just a matter of preference as to which you use. Right?

Thanks for the help. I had just thought it was bizzare because I had taken the time to optimize my laptop for maximum performance, and wanted to make sure it wasn't something unusual.
