Here I was, playing as the Uesugi, an since-the-beginning aliance with Takeda and it was all good. Then I take a province and decide to make it a vassal and the shogun pounds me in the head.

My empire will soon be destroyed by Takeda (which broke the alliance, one of Shingen's daughters is married to Kenshin... ) but does anyone have any tips for a new faction I decide to play as?

I hear ya there, I actually got the shogun to become an ally and he still stabbed me in the back. Even had the shogun as a vassal and was eventually backstabbed as well. It's scripted that you are going to fight everyone once your clan fame gets too high. My advice, don't rush to get all the "1st's" of everything and try not to overtake everyone in a few turns. Make alliances that make sense and actually lose a few battles.
If you can't say it face to face, don't say it here!!

The realm divide is pretty much inevitable. The moment you are too powerful the Ashikaga will attack you and every other clan will join, then you have to hold Kyoto for a year and get all the provinces you need. Your alliances will all be broken.

The enemy clans will even go to naval landings against you. I had several when I played as Tokugawa and held the north of Honshu. I lost a few provinces there actually, because I wasn't prepared for such invasions and my main armies were busy in and around Kyoto. On my second playthrough I was playing as the Ikko-ikki and allied with the Hojo. A few turns into the real divide the Hojo attacked me as well. Didn't do them any good though. Warrior monks ftw.

The only thing you can really do is watch how many provinces you need and take them slowly while preparing yourself for the massive attack that will come.

I know it doesn't help you much but I've had alliances survive the realm devide

I like the Date, good clan to play as with a good level of challenge

edit - Didn't realise this is my first post here, been a member since 2008, hehe

How many provinces does it take to trigger the realm divide? Because with Shimazu I already have 19 provinces (The island where you start, Chosokabe's island, the Honma island with the gold mine and some cities in the continent) and I want to be prepared. Thanks.

Also, how do I bring up the battle map (online) again? Played hundreds of battles with it, now just gone, is it an option the host puts or what?

Depends on your campaign settings. And you can watch your fame bar. Once it hits maximum, well, be prepared for war.

Date, Chosokabe and Shimazu are nice to play, because they usually aren't surrounded. Mori aren't too bad either. All the others on Honshu can be tough even to start up, because they all surround each other.
