Dead Island Discussion
At the bottom of the new game screen is online options. I had to go there to change it from cooperative to single player. That would suck if it still lets people join me.
When someone is near you it gives you the option to join them with the J key.
It doesnt Stay single player.
Look at your modems activity lights when your in game under "Single" player and you'll see what i mean.
I wonder if setting the number of slots to one or changing it from internet to LAN would make a difference. That is weird it does not stay single player. Hopefully it gets patched.
When you start a game, there is at the bottom 'Online Options' to regulate if you want others to be able to join your game and I believe whether or not the options shows up to join other games.
I'm having a hard enough time just getting it to run without crashing for extended periods, among other serious bugs.
Yeah, really. If any computer is connected to a modem/router, it'll show activity. Even if a signal is just coming in and nothing's connected most will still show activity. syduck:
Anyway, confirming that it's apparently an issue localized to DigitalIP or he forgot to switch it back after playing coop. It still pops up saying you can join other players near you, but I there was no way to get to the Game Lobby submenu, so no way to invite friends, nor was the game showing up for my friends.
Steam only uses Internet activity when
1: You get a msg
2: Someone comes online
3: someone goes offline
4: someone plays a game
5: someone changes their Name
6: someone joins a game
Steam does not keep a continuous activity on your connection, ONLY when something changes like the above mentioned.
The game itself IS continuous because it updates you on if someone is near you and keeps checking other peoples reletive distance from where your at.
Still dont believe me then check it yourself man, i do know what im talking about, especially considering the fact Steam is the only Internet Application running while im playing a game.
Still dont believe me? then check it for yourself.

As far as the limiting the number of people, i havent seen that.
But at this point choosing Single Player by itself does not keep it single player.
Hope alot of people that got the game dont have bandwidth limits because the game does infact keep a continuous internet activity.

EDIT: i was correct, i just checked it. its set on Single Player, the Multiplayer options are greyed out. ive been playing like that the whole time yet am still able to see when people are near me and am given the choice if i want to join them or not.
i REALLY hope they fix that crap. what happens if you want to play offline on Steam? will it still use your connection? interesting question i think.

I'm not going to argue with you at this point, because frankly, after working on-site tech support, people like you can't be told they're wrong. But I will say again, activity is constant if your computer is connected. In order to have access to the internet, your computer essentially pings your ISP and DNS constantly in order to... you know, actually keep an active internet connection. If you're judging by your router/modem's activity light, then some only register "high intensity" pings from your devices accessing the network.
And for the record, Steam works by maintaining a constant connection to their servers to check for game updates/news. Otherwise, the Community features like chat wouldn't work - or rather, wouldn't work nearly as well as they do.
Edit: Just saw your edit. All I can say is: what?
You're not connecting to anybody's games, nor they your own. It's just showing that someone with similar story progress is in the same area as you.

Hmmm how can this be if its on Single Player..
OHHH I KNOW its because the game is continuously using your connection and is constantly checking for other players!
HOW Stupid of me!
POINT MADE TYVM
Before you Condemn someones intelligence, TRY Researching it yourself!
The game cant compare your progress to someone elses outta nowhere if it WASNT USING YOUR CONNECTION!
If you have a network monitoring program, CHECK IT YOURSELF.
And for the record, if i was wrong, id sure as hell admit it. But i KNOW im not wrong. so try again buddy.
And just because you were an on site tech doesnt mean a thing, did i bother to mention my 12 years of experience with PCs? no i didnt and yet you for some reason or another had to include your supposed experience? Yeah, Ok.
